Journey to the Watchtower Spirits Tier List
Score rolls by what they do on the dunes, not by unverified names or drop rates.
Spirit rolls are one of the two random layers in Journey to the Watchtower. The other is Sins. This page is a framework, not a named catalog. The wiki does not invent Spirit names, rarity tables, or drop percentages. If the in-game index shows a name, use that name in your notes. If a video overlay invents a title the HUD never prints, ignore the overlay.
You spawn on a desert line toward a three-arch Watchtower. Deadly light, a sandworm, and stamina drain punish greedy routes. A Spirit that looks flashy in the roll window is worthless if it does not help you hold a line, recover after a +1 pickup, or survive the light long enough to bank Insanity. Servers hold 15 players; your Spirit is still yours alone.
Pair this list with the Sins tier list and Spirits and Sins. New accounts should skim the Beginner build so you do not reroll during the first hour when stamina upgrades matter more than a pretty Spirit.
How to read a Spirit roll
Open the roll result and ask four questions:
- Does it change movement (speed, burst, or how you take a dune line)?
- Does it change stamina (max, drain, or recovery after a sprint)?
- Does it change Insanity (gain per +1, while moving, or near the light)?
- Does it change survival (light timing, sandworm windows, or how death converts into a rebirth)?
If you cannot answer those from the tooltip, the roll is not S-tier no matter how loud the animation is. Compare the answers to your current upgrade spread. A movement Spirit on an account that still has raw stamina at the shop floor is usually a keep. An Insanity Spirit on an account that dies to the first light pulse is usually a bench.
S through D scoring
S covers two axes including movement or stamina. A covers the axis you currently die to. B is honest but narrow. C is situational or a VIP echo. D has no readable effect you can trigger yet; do not protect it. A B movement Spirit can outrun an S Insanity Spirit if you still cannot survive the light. Re-score after each shop session using Upgrade Priority.
Movement versus stamina versus Insanity
Movement Spirits earn their keep on the open sand. If you take longer to walk between orbs, you take more light cycles and more sandworm risk for the same Insanity. When two rolls are otherwise equal, prefer the one that lets you cover ground without dumping the stamina bar.
Stamina Spirits are the beginner default. Empty stamina is the most common fail state in the first hours. A Spirit that stretches a sprint or refunds a slice after a pickup will add more distance than an Insanity bonus you never live to collect.
Insanity Spirits matter once you can stay on the line. Do not rank an Insanity roll S until you can describe when the bonus actually ticks. If it only fires near the Watchtower and you still die in the first third of the map, it is not S for you yet. Survival Spirits stack with the habits on Survive the Light; they do not replace them.
When to keep a mid-tier Spirit
Keep a B roll if it is the only thing covering an axis your shop upgrades have not reached. Replace it when you just bought a shop upgrade that duplicates the Spirit’s only job, when a later roll covers that job plus movement or stamina, or when you change goals from “learn the dunes” to “push the arches,” which is the Distance build conversation.
Do not reroll in a panic after one sandworm death. Check whether you had stamina, whether you were standing in the light, and whether you ignored a +1 because you were staring at the roll UI. VIP (199 R$) adds +50% Insanity and +50% Speed. Score the Spirit as if VIP were off, then note the pass as a multiplier. Lightning Trail (199 R$) is a cosmetic and does not belong on this ladder.
Keep a one-line log: four-axis scores, whether the Spirit survived the next rebirth, and how far you got. Refuse comment-section name lists. This Spirits tier list ranks jobs, and jobs do not expire when a tooltip is renamed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for desert runs, rebirths, and rolls.
Why does this Spirits tier list have no names?
This wiki does not invent Spirit names or drop rates. Score the HUD tooltip with the S–D ladder.
Should I reroll until I get an S Spirit on day one?
No. Buy stamina first and follow the Beginner build.
Does VIP change Spirit rankings?
VIP multiplies Insanity and Speed. Score the Spirit without the pass, then treat VIP as a multiplier.
How do Sins compare to Spirits?
Sins are a second roll layer with a slot limit. See the Sins tier list and Spirits and Sins.
Is Lightning Trail a Spirit?
No. Lightning Trail is a 199 R$ cosmetic trail and gets no S–D grade here.
