Journey to the Watchtower Upgrade Priority
Early stamina, mid speed, late Insanity. Shop order beats random Spirit luck.
Journey to the Watchtower is an incremental because death is supposed to leave you stronger. That only happens if the shop order is sane. The three upgrades the experience itself advertises are stamina, speed, and Insanity gain. This page is the spend ladder: what to buy in the first hours, what to buy once you can finish a light cycle, and what to buy when you are aiming at the three arches.
It is not a hidden stat table. It does not invent per-level costs. Open the shop, read your current numbers, and apply the phases below. For the button-by-button shop tour, use Upgrades. For what happens when you die, use Rebirth. For a loadout that follows this ladder, use the Beginner build.
Why stamina is first
Most early deaths are empty-bar deaths. You sprint toward a +1, the bar hits zero, and the sandworm or the light finishes the run. Extra Insanity on that corpse is theoretical. Extra speed on an empty bar is a faster corpse. Extra stamina is more time to pick up +1s and more time to walk out of a bad line.
Spend the first shop sessions on stamina until you can grab several +1s, wait out a light pulse, and die to a route mistake instead of an empty bar.
If Enchanced Recovery (149 R$, official spelling Enchanced, +50% stamina regen) is in your budget, it supports this phase. It does not replace the shop. Do not skip this phase because a Spirit roll looked like a speed bonus. Score the roll on the Spirits tier list, then keep buying stamina until the fail state changes.
Mid run: speed after the bar is honest
Once stamina is no longer the thing that ends the attempt, buy speed. The Watchtower is a distance check. Speed shortens the number of light cycles and sandworm windows you have to survive for the same stretch of sand.
You are ready when you are dying to the light or the worm with stamina left, you can describe your route in three landmarks instead of “I ran until I died,” and you have rebirthed enough that the next run starts with a bar that lasts through the first pickup cluster.
VIP (199 R$, +50% Insanity and +50% Speed) sits on this phase as a multiplier. If you already own VIP, buy fewer raw speed levels than a free account would, and look earlier at Insanity. Lightning Trail (199 R$) is a cosmetic. It does not count as a speed upgrade.
Late run: Insanity when you can cash it
Insanity is the long-run currency. It makes rebirths feel permanent. It is also wasted if you die before the bonus ticks. Buy Insanity after you can stay on the line long enough to see the number move during a living run, not only on the death recap.
Put remaining shop currency into Insanity gain once stamina and speed are “good enough,” not perfect. Stop panic-buying stamina the moment you have a comfortable bar. If a Sin or Spirit already boosts Insanity, count that as part of the stack before you overbuy the shop line. Grade those rolls on the Sins tier list and the Spirits page instead of double-paying for the same axis.
Players who skip straight to Insanity on hour one usually post short distances. Fix the shop first.
Rebirth is part of the ladder
Death is not a wipe. The rule is simple: do not rebirth with unused shop currency that could have bought the next stamina or speed level, and do not refuse a rebirth because you are “almost” at the arches with an empty bar.
Use the Rebirth guide for the confirmation flow, and the Rebirth Planner when you want a checklist instead of a paragraph. After each rebirth, re-enter this ladder at the phase that matches the new fail state. A faster body can suddenly make stamina first again. That is expected. The phases are a loop, not a one-way campaign.
A simple spend rule you can remember in the shop
If the last two deaths were empty-bar, buy stamina. If the last two deaths were light or worm with bar remaining, buy speed. If the last two deaths happened after a long, stable line and the recap is the only place you see Insanity jump, buy Insanity. If you cannot remember the last two deaths, walk one short run on purpose and watch the bar.
That rule beats copying another avatar on a 15-player server. Their VIP, Enchanced Recovery, and Sin slots are not yours. Buy for the death you had, then go back out onto the sand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for desert runs, rebirths, and rolls.
What should I upgrade first?
Stamina. Empty-bar deaths waste Insanity. Then see Upgrades.
When do I switch from stamina to speed?
When you die to the light or sandworm with stamina still on the bar.
Is Insanity a bad first upgrade?
Yes if you die before it ticks. Buy it once you can stay on the line.
Does VIP change the order?
VIP adds +50% Speed and +50% Insanity, so you can enter those phases a little earlier. Stamina is still first.
Where does rebirth fit?
Rebirth after a death that converted shop progress. See Rebirth and the Beginner build.
