Journey to the Watchtower Stamina, Speed, and Insanity Upgrades
Spend the three upgrade axes by stage: survive the stones, then carry speed, then make rebirths actually change the next body.
Journey to the Watchtower gives you three upgrade axes: stamina, speed, and Insanity gain. That is the official list. Spend them by stage so a death still banks power on the way to the three-arch Watchtower. This page does not invent extra stats, drop rates, or a secret fourth bar.
Ranked table: upgrade priority. First-hour spends: beginner build. Reset: Rebirth Guide. Index: guides hub. This guide is the reasoning between those pages.
The three axes
Stamina is whether a sprint is a tool. Burst on the torch-lined stone path, recover, and keep a reserve for Watchtower light and for the sandworm that bursts from dunes with a toothed, flower-like mouth. Without stamina, speed is a faster corpse.
Speed is whether you can collect on-path +1s and close clusters before the lane gets ugly. It is valuable only on stone with a reserve. VIP’s +50% Speed at 199 Robux makes this axis louder and empty-bar deaths louder.
Insanity gain is whether the next journey is actually different after you rebirth. Official copy says every death makes the next journey easier. VIP also adds +50% Insanity. Early deaths still belong to stamina; later identical deaths belong to Insanity.
Passes modify the axes; they do not replace them. Enchanced Recovery is 149 Robux for +50% stamina regen (store spelling Enchanced). Sin Second Slot at 299 Robux and Lightning Trail at 199 Robux are not these three buys; see Spirits and Sins.
Early stage: stamina first
You are in the early stage if you die on the first stretches, empty the bar in open sand, or cannot recover on stones. That is most of Getting Started. Buy stamina until burst-walk feels like a choice. Ignore speed until you can take on-path +1s without panic. Ignore Insanity gain until a journey lasts long enough to feel a reset.
Early speed is a trap because the desert looks wide: you hold sprint, leave the stones, and meet the worm. Early Insanity is a trap because a ten-second death produces another ten-second body. If you hold sprint, no stamina upgrade can keep up. Confirm burst-walk on the controls guide before you buy the same stamina node twice.
Mid stage: speed when you can spend it
You are in the mid stage if you stay on torches, survive the first worm contact, and still fail to chain +1s or reach the next cluster before light rises. Keep enough stamina that a cluster sprint does not zero the bar. Buy speed so on-path pickups and the next torch happen inside one burst. Add Insanity gain when two journeys in a row feel identical despite clean play.
Mid-stage speed is not hold Shift longer. It is the burst covers more stone. If deaths stay empty-bar, you promoted yourself too soon. Read Survive the Light before you buy speed to outrun a mechanic that wants a reserve. The distance build assumes this split already works.
Late stage: Insanity gain and the rebirth loop
You are in the late stage if the lane is readable, worm dodges are boring, and the Watchtower is a stamina-and-light problem. Maintain stamina so the final approach still has a reserve. Maintain enough speed to take the last on-path +1s without dune cuts. Put remaining deaths into Insanity gain so rebirth is not a copy-paste body.
Late-stage players stall by buying speed they cannot spend because light still deletes empty bars, or by chasing rolls instead of the three axes. Rolls can help a journey; they do not replace a rebirth spend. See Reach the Watchtower for the route those spends are supposed to finish.
Stage-by-stage snapshot
Died in sand off the path: stamina, then stones, no speed. Died empty on stones: stamina, or Enchanced Recovery if burst-walk is already clean. Died with reserve but short of the next cluster: speed. Died to light after a clean line: stamina reserve first, then Insanity gain if the next body would be identical. Died to worm after a cut: no new speed. Two clean deaths, same distance: Insanity gain.
Use upgrade priority when you want that snapshot as a ranking. Do not invent percentages the client does not show. VIP’s +50% values and Enchanced Recovery’s +50% regen are the only pass numbers this wiki will repeat.
Passes that change the math
VIP (199 Robux): +50% Insanity and +50% Speed. Bought early, it tempts full sprints, so be stricter about stamina. Bought late, it accelerates a loop you already run. Enchanced Recovery (149 Robux): +50% stamina regen, best when burst-walk is already clean. Sin Second Slot (299 Robux) and Lightning Trail (199 Robux) do not buy these three axes.
On a 15-player server, nobody else’s upgrades apply to you. Individual progression means your menu is the only menu that matters.
Buy the upgrade that finishes the next stretch of stone
Open the upgrade screen with a named stretch in mind: the next torch cluster, the next on-path +1, the next worm contact, the next light wall. Buy the axis that makes that stretch survivable. Then close the menu and run that stretch only. If you buy for a fantasy arrival at the arches while you still die on easy stones, you did not upgrade. You decorated a death. Spend smaller, run farther, rebirth, and let Insanity have the deaths that were already clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for desert runs, rebirths, and rolls.
Should I upgrade stamina or speed first?
Stamina first. Speed is for mid-stage players who already burst-walk on stones with a reserve. Early speed usually means a faster sandworm death. The beginner build follows that order.
When do I buy Insanity gain?
When two clean journeys end at the same distance and the next body would otherwise be a copy. It is the rebirth axis, not a fix for empty-bar panic. See the Rebirth Guide.
Do gamepasses replace upgrades?
No. VIP adds +50% Insanity and +50% Speed. Enchanced Recovery adds +50% stamina regen. They modify the three axes; they do not retire them. Sin Second Slot and Lightning Trail are not upgrade axes.
How does rebirth change upgrade order?
Each death should buy the axis that attacked that death. Empty bar: stamina. Safe but slow: speed. Clean but identical: Insanity gain. Rank the sequence on upgrade priority.
Are my upgrades shared on the 15-player server?
No. Progression is individual. Spend your own stamina, speed, and Insanity gain. Copying another player’s desert cut will not copy their menu.
